BACK IN HIS APARTMENT, Scott was standing with the fridge door open, trying to decide if he wanted to test the milk or not. It had already been a few days old when he left, so now it had about a week's worth of aging. He decided that it would probably be fine to use a drop in his tea. They hadn't cut the power to the building, so it had been refrigerated the whole time.

He put the kettle on the stove and was pleased that the gas worked, too. He grabbed a mug and a teabag and waited for the water to boil. On the counter next to the stove was the stack RSVPs. Margie was the one who knew the system for which RSVPs meant what.

What would Margie want now? He'd been puzzling over this question ever since seeing the vampire trapped in the bike cage. Margie, who would gladly hurt a fly, but became a blubbering wreck when watching ASPCA commercials, who couldn't stand humanity sometimes, but thought the world could be saved. What would she make of this new world her fiancée had been thrust into?

Brooke was right, of course. They had to study the enemy, discover weaknesses. Bullets and fire were it so far. And they were dead in every technical sense. The people they had been were long gone.

So then, why did locking one up in a cage make him so uneasy? Thankfully, he didn't have to worry about Margie becoming one of them, Ginny had said she took care of it. Yet even knowing that wasn't putting him at ease.

The whistle on the teapot started blowing and Scott poured his cup. He took it into the living room and set it on the desk he had his computer on. He opened the laptop's lid and turned it on.

Sitting at the computer was reminding him of something, but he couldn't put his finger on what at the moment. He checked his email, and sent one to Margie's parents telling them that wherever they were, they should stay there. They would be far safer out in the middle of nowhere than they would here.

The apartment was silent. It was beginning to bug him, so he turned on the stereo. The radio station that they usually listened to was off the air, so he tried another one. This one was rebroadcasting the news-only station. He didn't figure he needed news right now, so he put on a CD.

Almost instantly, some of the tension in his neck eased. Music. He didn't even notice the lack of music over the past few days, but clearly his mind had been affected by its absence. He turned it up and retreated to the sofa. Tea and music. All he needed now was someone to share it with.

He felt a tap on his knee and opened his eyes. Kate was standing there, looking a bit worse for wear. "We've got pizza down in the basement. If you're hungry."
